Gamefroot

Gamefroot is a 2D online game maker that does not require programming and is perfect for kids getting started with the basic concepts of making a game.

There a large number of assets to choose from that you add into your game. Terrain assets can be easily created by painting them onto your scene. You can also easily upload your own assets to use in your game.

Gamefroot includes a colorful event builder that simplifies the logical part of game making. Once you’re ready to publish you can do so easily on gamefroot.com or on mobile devices with a Pro subscription.

Gamefroot also comes with many learning packages for educators to easily integrate into a curriculum.

Flowlab

Flowlab is a 2D browser-based game creator that is intended for complete beginners and non-programmers. It has one of the most simplest UI and includes a sprite editor which allows you to edit and animate your sprites. Flowlab controls all logic through the visual scripting editor.

Flowlab is free to use, but the number of games are limited and you must upgrade to subscription plan if you want to export to Windows, iOS, Android, and Amazon mobile. Flowlab takes no royalties.

Flowlab also has a subscription plan for education that comes with a classroom dashboard to easily manage your classes, students, and games.

Scratch

Scratch is a great online beginner tool for kids to play around with making 2D games, animations, and stories. It was developed by members of MIT and is completely free to use. 

Creating projects is possible using the visual block editor which helps teach kids programming logic. There are plenty of resources to help you get started including a step-by-step guide and community forum.

Scratch has an offline version as well as a version for younger kids ages 5-7 called ScratchJr available to download.

With the latest version of Scratch, you can now play your games on desktop and tablet in addition to playing them on scratch.mit.edu.

Scratch also has Teacher Accounts for educators to manage students and classrooms.

Sploder

Sploder is a simple flash game maker targeted for kids. There are 5 different game builders to help you make a specific type of game. Most builders are 2D, but they also have a 2.5D overhead game builder.

The game builders include many prefabs to get you up and running quickly. You can even edit your own sprites with their graph editor. 

Their is no option to build your own custom events or behaviors, but you can assign controls to custom assets using their 2D Physics Creator.

Your game can be published on sploder.com, or embedded on any website.

Construct 3

Construct 3 is a great tool for both older kids and adults. It is 2d game creator software that runs in your browser and works offline once loaded. You can build games without code using the visual scripting editor, but you can also add your own JavaScript plugins to extend functionality and behavior.

They offer a free version that you can test out immediately since it runs on the browser, but they disable some features that are available in the paid version. There are also pricing plans available for eduction purposes.

Construct 3 is supported in all major browsers.
