There are many game creation tools and software out there for game making enthusiasts to use. If you prefer not to download anything or just rather use an online game engine for whatever reason, we found a few free online game engines available for you to try out.
Flowlab
Flowlab is a 2D browser-based game engine that is intended for complete beginners and non-programmers. It has one of the most simplest UI and includes a sprite editor which allows you to edit and animate your sprites. Flowlab controls all logic through the visual scripting editor.
Flowlab is free to use, but the number of games are limited and you must upgrade to subscription plan if you want to export to Windows, iOS or Android. Flowlab takes no royalties.
Sploder
Sploder is a free flash game maker. There are 5 different game builders to help you make a specific type of game. Most builders are 2D, but they also have a 2.5D overhead game builder. The game builders include many prefabs to get you up and running quickly. You can even edit your own sprites with their graph editor.
Their is no option to build your own custom events or behaviors, but you can assign controls to custom assets using their 2D Physics Creator.
Your game can be published on sploder.com, or embedded on any website. You can use your game commercially as long as you link back to Sploder. Sploder does not collect any royalties made from commercializing your game.
Twine
Twine is for those looking for an online text game engine. It is a completely free open-source tool for making text-based games. It is available for download, but also has a browser version to use online.
No programming is required and when using the browser version, everything is saved within the browser and no account is needed. Be sure to archive often so you can download backup files and not lose any of your work.
Twine exports to HTML and do not take any royalties.
Quest
Quest is another open-source tool for creating text-based games. Like Twine, it is free and has a browser version as well as a downloadable version for Windows.
Programming is not required, but you must create an account before using the browser version. Quest gives you the option to host on their website if you do not have anywhere else to place it at the current time. Quest has been known to be a top destination for text games so publishing on their website will bring you traffic.
Quest’s code is free to modify under the MIT license and they do not take any royalties.
Cyberix3D
This little gold mine is a free browser-based 3D game maker that can make relatively simple 3D games. This engine is the perfect testing grounds for beginners who want to jump straight into 3D game development.
Cyberix3D allows you to publish to desktop, mobile, and Web, specifically Flash. However, the developers stated in their last blog that they are well aware of Flash’s demise coming in 2020 and plan to rebuild the engine for HTML5 before that time.
Cyberix3D does not take any royalties.
