How To Decide Which Video Game Creator Software Is Right For You

Video game creator software or game design software is a tool that allows you to make games without having to build a game engine from scratch. This opens up the opportunity for more people at any skill level to develop games. Below are some questions to help guide your decision in choosing the right software.

Do I want to code?

The first question you have to ask yourself is whether you want to code. If the answer to this question is no, fortunately for you, there are options out there to help the non-programmer get started. If you answered yes, then there are a plethora of options to choose from. Check out Top 5 Tools To Make Games Without Coding.

What platform(s) do I want to publish to?

Whether you want to publish to desktop, mobile, console or web, knowing what publishing options are available for each software is important before choosing one. For example, Construct 3 is a browser-based 2D game creator that makes it very easy to get started, but they have limited publishing options for consoles. Obviously, this software would then be better suited for someone who wanted to only publish for web, desktop or mobile.

What programming language/style do I prefer to use? (A question for programmers or prospective programmers)

Specific game maker software have a specific programming language(s) dedicated for building games on their software. Many use there own proprietary language which are based off of some common programming language and some tools just use the common programming language itself. For example, Unity requires C#, so if that is a language you are interested in learning or are already familiar with, Unity could be a good choice for you.

Will I keep all the revenue?

This question is very important depending on your needs. When and if you are interested in monetizing your game, the software you choose will dictate the percentage of revenue that is actually yours. Some take no revenue at all, while others take a cut after a certain amount of revenue is reached.

Price Considerations

Game creator software can be pricy. The good news is that much of the available software out there comes with the ability to try it out before paying anything. Free publishing is also available for some of these tools, but they come with many restrictions and you will have to check out the specific software’s pricing plans to learn what those limitations are. Open-source software such as Godot are also available for free and offer both programming and non-programming options.
